In a significant move towards promoting community harmony and cohesion, a three-day Community Grievance Training was held from February 21 to 23, 2024, in Albreda. Organized by the Project Implementation Unit's (PIU) Environmental and Social Safeguards team, the training aimed to empower local community members with the skills in leadership, advocacy and addressing issues such as gender-based violence, sexual exploitation and abuse/ sexual harassment, and environmental and social issues necessary to address grievances effectively and fairly.
The training brought together key community leaders from Albreda and neighboring areas, equipping them to manage grievances related to both Sexual Exploitation, Abuse, and Harassment (SEA/SH) and non-SEA/SH complaints. Participants received a comprehensive understanding of what constitutes a grievance and were taught best practices for handling such issues with transparency and impartiality.
The diverse group of 10 participants included the Village Development Committee (VDC) Chairman, representatives from local women’s groups, the Youth Leader of Juffureh and Albreda, members of the National Centre for Arts and Culture, and other prominent figures in the community. This wide representation ensured a holistic approach to grievance resolution, addressing concerns from various sectors.
Key Training Highlights
The training introduced participants to a structured curriculum covering:
1. Definition and Types of Grievances: Explanation of individual and communal grievances within a community setting.
2. Roles and Responsibilities: Emphasis on the importance of impartiality, confidentiality, and respect for all involved parties in grievance resolution.
3. Grievance Handling Procedures: A step-by-step guide on how to receive, document, investigate, and resolve grievances.
4. Communication Skills: Training on active listening, empathy, and conflict resolution to foster respectful and constructive dialogue.
5. Conflict Management: Practical tools for de-escalating tensions through mediation, negotiation, and dialogue.
6. Gender based violence sexual exploitation and sexual harassment: definitions and prevention strategies
7. Leadership skills for effective committee management: practical steps on visioning, collaboration, decision making & problem solving, accountability etc.
8. Responding to disclosure: A Survivor centered approach with emphasis on best interest of Survivor, do no harm, confidentiality and integrity.
9. Reporting: practical steps to user friendly pictural reporting forms
The training featured interactive sessions, including group discussions, case studies, and role-playing exercises. Participants applied theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios, with pre- and post-training assessments indicating significant knowledge gains.
Key Outcomes and Recommendations
The training yielded several key outcomes:
- Increased Awareness: Participants gained a deeper understanding of the importance of grievance mechanisms in fostering community development.
- Enhanced Skills: Improved communication and conflict resolution skills were evident through interactive sessions.
- Community Engagement: Participants expressed a strong commitment to actively engage in future grievance resolution processes within their community.
Based on the success of the training, the following recommendations were made:
- Continued Training: Regular refresher sessions are recommended to reinforce skills and knowledge.
- Ongoing Community Dialogue: Encouraging open dialogue within the community can help prevent grievances from escalating.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Engaging local authorities and relevant stakeholders in grievance resolution will ensure transparency and accountability.

The Community Grievance Training in Albreda marks a pivotal step in equipping local leaders with the skills needed to address grievances within their community. With continued support and engagement, Albreda is poised to benefit from strengthened social cohesion and a culture of peaceful, transparent grievance resolution.
