On Tuesday, 14 January 2025, the YEP Tourism project team visited the Tourism Diversification and Resilience Project (TDRGP) to discuss potential synergies and collaborative opportunities aimed at strengthening The Gambia’s tourism sector. The meeting marked an important step towards enhancing the effectiveness of both projects and identifying key areas where their efforts can complement each other for greater impact.
Both project teams emphasized the significance of collaboration, complementarity, and synergy in achieving the overarching goals of each initiative. The TDRGP team provided a detailed overview of their key components, while the YEP Tourism team shared insights into their mission and objectives. This exchange of information allowed both sides to identify several key areas where collaboration could bring immediate value.

The discussions led to the identification of four key areas where both projects could work together:
1. Development of Assessment and Strategy Documents: The two teams recognized the need to strengthen data-driven approaches to tourism development, ensuring that strategies align with both national and global best practices.
2. MSME Development Initiatives: With a focus on supporting micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), both projects are keen to collaborate on initiatives that will enhance the capacity of local businesses, particularly in the tourism and creative sectors.
3. Product Development and Investment: Creating new, diversified tourism products and promoting investment in these offerings was identified as a crucial area for collaboration. The projects will work together to stimulate investment in sustainable tourism practices.
4. Capacity Building and Institutional Strengthening: Both projects agreed to collaborate on building the capacity of key institutions and local stakeholders, ensuring that the tourism sector is better equipped to adapt to future challenges, including climate change.

It was agreed that experts in these components would convene to develop a structured pathway for both projects to effectively complement each other. This collaboration will be guided by shared goals and focused on maximizing the benefits to The Gambia’s tourism sector.
Both teams reaffirmed their commitment to fostering sincere collaboration and strengthening the partnership between the YEP Tourism project and the TDRGP. Together, they aim to create a more resilient, inclusive, and competitive tourism sector that will contribute to the long-term sustainability of the industry.
